Autumn Musings October 20th 2010

Since my last entry the summer has come and gone. What a summer it has been.
Our Celebration year will soon be over and it seems to have flown by. Hard to imagine that when Bournemouth was taking it's first tentative steps as a town King George III was on the throne, Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens and Tchaikovsky had not yet been born, and Chopin was born in the same year. What a difference that makes to one's thoughts of the Town.
Unfortunately the Air Festival was washed out, which was a great shame for the many thousands of people that came to see it from all over the country, but there have been many other attractions to enjoy. Our own small village fete was also washed out, but we are undaunted and we will have it next year on Saturday August 13th.

Summer is Here

It has been rather longer than I would have liked since I added to my Blog so here goes to try and catch up.
Of course, after the election we have all been watching very closely to see how things will work out with a Coalition Government. It is a hard task that awaits them and only time will tell if it is successful. We can only wish them luck, especially our own MP Tobias Ellwood.
It has been rather interesting in the Council also with the resignation of one Leader and the election of a new one.
For myself, Cllr Sue Anderson, I have been very busy working with the Moordown 2010 Committee and we are now well on the way with the preparations for the Moordown Village Fete on August 14th from 12 Noon till 5 pm. We are arranging all sorts of fun things to do so we are hoping for a good turnout. Look out for the Posters and admire the Logos designed by Charlotte and Lily of Moordown St John's School. If you would like to be involved you would be greeted with open arms. Even if you could only help out on the day.
The old spectre of back garden in fill or inappropriate planning has reared it's head again but we will continue to fight to get what you, the Residents, want.

Back to work Again

Congratulations to the Cherries on being promoted, they have done really well. I have never understood the logic behind fining a Club that is about to go into administration and then fining them X number of points. How is that going to help a Club recover?
At last it is all over (the Election) and we can get back to our plans for celebrating the centenary in Moordown.
We are still looking to increase the number of members of the 2010 Committee so if anybody is reading this and would like to help please contact me, Cllr Sue Anderson, Tel 397047 or sue4moordown@aol.com
At the moment we are planning a Fete or fun Day in Moordown for the middle of August, and some other rather more unusual events for later in the Autumn. Look out for notices and posters.
Despite the election we have not been idle and myself and Cllr Lancashire have continued to press for the landscaping of the small plot of land at the top of Brassey Road, this is still an ongoing project. The restoration of the Playground in Brassey Road, instigated by Cllr Beverley Dunlop in her days in the Cabinet,is nearly finished, the slide and the flower planting are the last things to be done. It is looking very smart down there and the children all seemed to be having a good time. This is an excellent addition to the play facilities for younger children, in this part of the Ward. I would just add a word of caution, however, this is meant for the younger children and to have older, bigger children riding their bikes around when there are toddlers playing is courting disaster. Please will you ask children NOT to ride in the playground.
The new Moordown Trader's Association is taking shape and holds regular monthly meetings, if you are interested in joining please contact myself or Cllr Ian Lancashire. There has been a delay on starting the crossing in Malvern Road due to the extended and severe weather but the project is going ahead but will be a little later than we had hoped.
In addition we are continuing to be aware of, and where requested, to oppose inappropriate planning applications. I am sorry to say that a developer has gone to appeal, for the third time, to add a second floor of 12 flats on the beautiful Mayfield Park building. If this is passed it would be sacrilege and would spoil one of the most attractive and eye catching buildings in Moordown. If you have not opposed it already and would like to, please contact me and I will help you do so. I am also awaiting the registration of a new planning application for two/three houses in the garden of the thatched cottage at No1 Mcwilliam road. As this cottage is a Grade2 listed building we have to be very aware of any intrusion on or near the building as, only being a cob cottage, it is doubtful whether it could stand the traffic and disturbance that the new buildings would generate.

Logo competition at Moordown St John's School

The Moordown 2010 Committee invited the children of Moordown St John's Primary school to design a logo for the Committee, the idea is to give Moordown an identity of it's own, there was a tremendous response and over 100 pupils took part. They were all lovely and were obviously very proud of their school and the village where they live, Moordown. Unfortunately we could only choose two but when the two we have chosen are revealed, it is a secret until the school returns next week, we will be using them on all our posters and correspondence. Keep an eye out for Posters etc. during the summer.

General Election At Last

Good Evening everyone. I hope there are people reading this. At last the Election has been called and we can get on with the job in hand, namely getting rid of this incompetant and corrupt government. It is not going to be easy and will certainly be a lot of hard work but the thought of another 5 years of Gordon Brown really upsets me.
Did anyone read the weekend papers report on how much Tony Blair costs us all? Although he has made millions out of his position as the former British Prime Minister we, the Tax Payers, are still paying for his personal Security. That is quite disgraceful I don't mind the Police force supplying the manpower but I think it is a bit rich that Tony doesn't pay for it , or at least make a serious contribution.
If anyone would like to get involved in helping with the election, locally to re elect Tobias Ellwood, please contact me by e mail becaqp1@aol.com It is not only hard work but can be great fun at the same time.

723 Wimborne Road

At last the people living above 723 can breathe cleanly and easily, at least for the moment. The application to change the usage of 723 into an MOT, servicing Centre and car show room has been turned down. Unfortunately the young man involved may very well go to appeal but that could take a long time and I hope he is in a hurry.
The application was largely turned down due to a concerted effort by the Traffic management team and the Residents with a little help from the Councillors, obviously a winning combination. This has been happening all over Moordown and has helped reduce the number of back garden in-fills and other inappropriate developments in the Village.
Your Councillors are always willing to help if you contact them. We can't always win but we will always give it a really good try.

Anniversary of Halifax Crash in Moordown

Monday 22nd of March will be the 66th Anniversary of the crash of a Halifax bomber in Moordown. The crew of five were all killed taking three local residents with them. There is full eye witness account of this horrendous crash on the Winton forum website, written by Mr Russ Barnes who witnessed it as a small boy growing up in Moordown. It makes for very interesting reading and gives a picture , not only of the crash, but also of Moordown as it was then. How very different it was from now. As far as I know there is no memorial for the crash and the people that died at the time. and that is what we are proposing for the small plot of land at the junction of Brassey Road and Wimborne Road. the money for the garden has been set aside from the Local Improvement Fund and the money for the Memorial stone or Placque we hope to raise from public subscription.
If you know of anyone who was living in Moordown then and they have any memories of the crash please get them to reply to this blog.

Good News This Week March 18th 2010

For once the Inspectorate seems to be on the side of the Residents. An application , in Coronation Avenue, to change two perfectly good family houses into a mews of six houses has been turned down. This would be a most incongrous development and totally different from anything else in the road. The Inspector spent a lot of time in Moordown looking at the proposed site and other properties in the area and then, in a mere 48 hours, virtually unprecedented in my experience, made her decision to refuse the suggestion. This is a real victory and I congratulate the Inspector for her for common sense.

Other good news, in the realm of Planning, is that the proposal to change No 723 Wimborne Road into another MOT Centre has also been recommended for refusal on Monday evening. If you are interested in seeing how Planning works come down to the Planning board at the Town Hall at about 5.15 on Mon.22nd.

SATURDAY 6TH MARCH. Pot Holes and Elections

At last we are really beginning the count down to the Election. Something that can't come to soon for me. The sooner we can get rid of this incompetent and corrupt government the better. I wish that having an election and electing a Conservative Government would wave a magic wand and return us to the economy that the Labour Party took over from us, unfortunately it wont and there will be hard times ahead for all of us. Today I went to a meeting with our MP Tobias Ellwood I am pleased to say that he has agreed to have a public meeting here in Moordown, date to be arranged. Look out for date and venue. I hope many of you will come along and put your questions to him. I am also looking for people to help deliver election literature, display a poster, in Moordown or perhaps do some telling, at the polls, on the day. If there is anyone out there who would like to help please phone me on 397047 or 527049. Or post a comment on here. If you have read this Blog please add yourself as a follower, thanks.

This afternoon after my meeting, I went for my weekly drive around Moordown. I try to do this at least once a week, just looking to see if there is anything urgent that needs attention. Today I logged 20 pot holes and a very untidy empty building site. These were in Easter Rd, Naseby Rd, Malvern Rd, Nursery Rd, Hillcrest Rd,Redbreast Rd, Priory View Rd, Coronation Avenue and the bottom of Winston Rd, the untidy building site was, as ever, in Priory View road. I shall report them to Technical Services on Monday morning and hope to see them repaired very shortly. If you know of any others, in roads I have not mentioned, please let me know and I will report them.

This Week

How nice to see a little sunshine this week, despite the cold wind, it really raises my spirits.

This week I have had more requests to help sort out thoughtless parking in different parts of the Ward. If you park in a different part of the Ward than your own area please take a look around you and see if you are likely to cause anybody else any difficulty with parking or turning etc. Often inconsiderate parking can lead to accidents, bad community feeling and yellow lines, if the refuse lorry can't get through.

This weekend should see the end of most of the problems, of the Gas Board, in Brassey Road. Hopefully then we will be able to get on with the making of the little Remembrance Garden at the junction.

Moordown 2010 Committee, Bi Centenary celebrations

Tonight the Moordown 2010 Committee finalised their programme of events in celebration of the Bi Centenary celebrations. Through out the discussions the theme was always Community. Moordown is a close knit Community but perhaps it needs to loosen up a little bit and meet the neighbours. Most of our celebrations are children orientated but we have a good selection running right through the year. These include a design competition for a logo for Moordown, a short story and poetry competition for children and adults alike, a Bar B Que fete, a photo competition, and later in the year, a 'Moordown' antique Flog it event and a Moordown exclusive 'Question time' plus smaller events like a cream tea with a speaker on Moordown.
We are also hoping to finish the Brassey Road Memorial Garden, with a plaque to the Pilot and crewmen that died when a Halifax bomber crashed in the region of St John's Mews. We will also be remembering the Moordown residents that died as a result of the crash..

Wimborne Road Application

The Planning Application for 725 Wimborne road has been postponed until March 22nd. Seems that Highways do have some problems with it. . I look forward to seeing their report.

Indomitable Old Ladies In Moordown

Today I met another of Moordown's indomitable older ladies. I have been very fortunate, in the course of my duties to meet two really bright pensioner ladies, there must be something in the air in Moordown neither of them is in the best of health but their ability to think clearly and persue a cause is amazing. Also their speed of thought and energy, despite their ailments is truly breathtaking. I only hope that I have anything like their ability when I reach their age. God bless them both.

Say NO to another Off-Licence

An application has been submitted for an off-licence on Castle Lane West. this is despite there being one across the road at the Somerfield's garage, one a few hundred yards up West Way and dozens in the area of Charminster Road, to say nothing of Castle Point less than half a mile away. How many more drink outlets do we want or need? It is small wonder that the young teens can get so much alcohol.

If you want to try and curb the Number of drink outlets write to:
The Chairman, Licencing Board,
Town Hall, Bourne Avenue, Bournemouth.

Planning Application in Forest View Close

We are pleased to be able to report that the proposed development at 11 Forest View Road has been refused by the Planning Officers. In our opinion this was a very good decision as the development would have been very intrusive and would overlook other properties in the immediate area and cause the residents to lose the privacy of their own gardens.

Thursday 5th February. M.P.s Expenses

At last we have the full list of MPs expenses and who has paid and who has not. I am very happy to see that our own Tobias Ellwood was asked to pay back around £900.00 and this he has done. I am sure there have been some really fraudulent claims and I sincerely hope that whoever has been dishonest has to pay for it through the Courts, regardless of who it might be. Whilst this has been a useful exercise and has cleared up a system that was not only inefficient but also wrong it has unfortunately tarred all MP's with the same brush. This is just not fair as the majority of MP's are dedicated and hard working.

I am now hoping that there will be an investigation into the excessive bonuses paid to senior Civil Servants in the House of Commons, also answers to the questions why do Senior Civil Servants get bonuses? Why does Gordon Brown need so many Quangos? The number of staff employed by them has risen, over the last three years, from 92,500 to 110,000 and the cost has risen from £37billion to £46billion. If even half of them were disbanded it would go a very long way to paying off the immense National Debt.

Tuesday 2nd February 2010.

Into the 2nd month of the new decade already, how quickly the time is going.

Planning Applications
Today I learnt that the application for the change of usage of No. 723 Wimborne Road will go before the Planning Board on Monday 15th of Feb. If you have any queries please contact me, sue.anderson@bournemouth.gov.uk .

Malvern Road Crossing
We are very pleased to report that we have been granted a pedestrian crossing in Malvern Road. We Councillors have been trying for the past three years to get this and it should be up and running by April/May, just in time for the better weather and an increase in usage of the playground. We are sure this will be welcomed by people from all over Moordown who use and have to cross that busy road.

2010 Celebrations in Moordown
A Committee has been formed to co-ordinate our celebrations and these will include some quite unusual events. We like to think that they will be enjoyable, unique in the Borough and that we will have a good Community involvement. More about that later, however, if you would like to help on the Committee we would be delighted. Please contact : sue.anderson@bournemouth.gov.uk

Moordown in Bloom
It has long been a wish of ours to have some sort of floral display in the High Street and for residents to compete in the main Bournemouth in Bloom competition. We have seen some really pretty gardens in our wanderings around the Ward and some lovely hanging baskets as well. This year we would like everyone to make that little bit of extra effort especially for the Bi-Centenary Celebrations. The Bowling Club has won awards in the last couple of years and we are sure the rest of the Village can too.

Anecdotes, Memories and Photos of Moordown
We are trying to build up a collection of the above to, eventually, get a small volume of the History of Moordown printed. Moordown has a rich past, being one of the oldest continually inhabited areas in Bournemouth, and we would love to hear any stories you have.
